CFP® Certification Examination Professional Summary for CPAs
Complete your CFP® certification by November

This customized Professional Summary curriculum was designed for Certified Public Accountants, and is based on the educational requirements specified by the CFP Board of Standards for certification. The curriculum is comprised of five 15-hour courses: Principles of Financial Planning, Insurance Planning, Investment Planning, Retirement Planning, and Estate Planning.

This series of courses is designed to provide a comprehensive education in financial planning, expand the body of knowledge within the financial planning disciplines, and address the learning objectives promulgated by the CFP Board of Standards.

Sessions 1 and 2
Principles of Financial Planning
CFP Learning Objectives 1-14

This course introduces students to the fundamental issues of personal financial planning with emphasis on the process of financial planning. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of the financial planning process, the economic environment, financial analysis, ethical and professional considerations in financial planning.

Sessions 3 and 4
Insurance Planning
CFP Learning Objectives 15-26

This course introduces students to the application of insurance planning and risk management in personal financial planning. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the legal aspects of insurance, property and liability policy analysis, life insurance policy analysis, and health insurance policy analysis,.

Sessions 5 and 6
Investment Planning
CFP Learning Objectives 34-43

This course introduces students to investment planning in the personal financial planning process. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of investment regulation, client assessment, investment theory, environment and financial markets, strategies and tactics, modern portfolio theory, and integration.

Sessions 7 and 8
Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits
CFP Learning Objectives 27-33 and 59-67

This course introduces students to the application of retirement planning and employee benefits in personal financial planning. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of the ethical considerations, social security and Medicare benefits, retirement plan types, qualified plan characteristics, distributions and distribution options, group insurance benefits, other employee benefits, and analysis of retirement factors.

Sessions 9 and 10
Estate Planning
CFP Learning Objectives 68-89

This course introduces students to the application of estate planning in personal financial planning. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of the fundamentals of estate planning, estate planning considerations and constraints, tools and techniques for general estate planning, and the tools and techniques for special estate planning situations.

    All assignments are to be prepared prior to the scheduled date for discussion.

The Income Tax Planning topics are to be reviewed independent of the course instruction (CFP Learning Objectives 44-58).
